weact
Combating racism and contributing to creating a non-discriminatory society
Why do we need weact?
There is a very high demand for low-threshold counselling services for people affected by racism. Existing counselling points often lack a critique of power and racism, multilingualism, accessibility and diversity among counsellors. This deficit exists throughout Germany, but particularly in rural areas. Counselling structures need to be supported, professionalized and expanded. weact covers the counselling needs of people affected by racism or other structural discriminations.

What is the aim of weact?
The weact project establishes and professionalizes community-based racism-critical contact and advice centres. The network consists of 13 supporting organizations, mostly in municipal migrant ran local networks or organizations, at twelve locations in six federal states in Germany.
What exactly does weact do?
Eleven community-based racism contact and advice centres provide initial and referral counselling – low-threshold initial support – to people affected locally. Quality standards are constantly being developed in order to combat racism and discrimination more effectively. We promote local, community-based anchoring and networking in the interests of those affected.

What is community-based anti-racism counselling?
We are:
Critical of power
With us, the person seeking counselling helps to determine the setting – for example, where the counselling takes place. When we talk about your concerns, we take power relations into account.
Intersectional
We recognise that because of various characteristics, sometimes attributed to you, you may be affected by racism or discrimination.
Partisan/solidary
We are always there for you. We will guide and support you in finding a way to deal with your experience.
Full of trust
What you share with us stays with us. We will not share your information and will only take action if you want us to.
Multilingual
Advice can be given in the language of your choice.
Local
We advise you how you want. In our consultation rooms, by phone, email or outreach.
Free of charge
The consultation is free of charge.

What else does weact do?
At four regional of eleven model locations, the supporting organisations and communities of those affected are also shaping anti-discrimination opening processes with the municipalities. Dialogues take place in local steering groups and think tanks as well as workshops for municipal employees (Augsburg/Nuremberg/Munich/Bavaria, Braunschweig/Hanover, Bensheim/Mannheim, Bielefeld/Bochum/Cologne/Munster/North Rhine-Westphalia) in order to combat racism and discrimination in municipal institutions. Sensitisation areas and recommendations for action are offered for local, state and federal authorities.

Who is weact for?
The project is primarily aimed at people affected by racism and (multiple) discrimination. Empowering them and making them visible is the central focus of the project. In the fight against structural racism, weact also aims to promote dialogue with municipalities, institutions and authorities as well as structural anchoring on the ground.

NeMO
The Bundesverband Netzwerke von Migrant*innenorganisationen e.V. (NeMO) is the umbrella organisation of more than 750 organisations that have joined together in 21 networks. They are active in 10 federal states. Since January 2014, NeMO has been committed to the interests of its target groups: It organises sustainable structures and instruments throughout Germany in order to build up participation policy and anti-racist expertise independently of individuals. The structures are dynamic and grassroots democratic: representatives of the individual associations are elected to the nine-member board. The board strategically directs the association’s work throughout Germany. At the operational level, the NeMO national association identifies the needs of the individual associations, reflects on what has been achieved and implements new projects. This is the task of the three-member board.
