Visualising racism against Sinti and Roma

The director of the Sinti Union Schleswig-Holstein e.V., Sinteza Kelly Laubinger, was rejected as a new member by a fitness centre because she belongs to a minority group. When Laubinger learned that this had happened to other Sinti at the same gym, the Sinti Union Schleswig-Holstein decided to make the racist incident public.

A local radio station published an interview, but initially no one in mainstream society was interested in the incident. So the Sinti Union Schleswig-Holstein decided to create its own publicity and set up its own platform. They set up social media accounts. Initially, only members of the Sinti Union Schleswig-Holstein reported anonymously about their experiences with racism from the majority society. It is not a question of revealing one’s own name, the town in which the incident took place, or naming individual companies. Rather, the aim is to give the Sinti and Roma minority a platform on which they can report on the racism they have experienced from the majority society. Gradually, more and more Sinti and Roma registered to make their experiences public.

Today, we receive requests from all over Germany from Sinti and Roma who want us to publish their accounts anonymously. We are the only self-organisation that does this work on a voluntary basis and exclusively by members of minorities.
